Traditionally held the first weekend in October, this year's event gets underway October 1,2, and 3, 1999 on Marktplatz in downtown Fredericksburg. Music, food and fun are the heart of this irresistible festival that celebrates Fredericksburg's German heritage. Oktoberfest is one event where the food and drink command center stage. Pureyors on the grounds will offer German pretzels, Opa's sausage on-a-stick, fajitas, burgers, shiskabobs, nachos, kraut, and the largest variety of beer (domestic and imported) of any festival in the area. Once inside the festival grounds, located on 42 acres at the corner of the Southwest Freeway (U.S. 59) and Highway 6 (25 minutes SW of downtown Houston, in the Texas Gulf Coast Region), visitors may enjoy the free, live entertainment on the main stage, children's stage and talent show/exhibition stage. An exciting children's interactive area is planned. The festival will include over 100 craft booths, and many other special exhibits. An exciting midway and carnival will be available and individuals may purchase tickets or a "Ride All Day" arm band. For those who hear the dinner bell, a fabulous food court will be available. For information call: (830)374-3161 [Return to top] November 19, Benefit Pour Les Enfants (For the Children) Join us at the Garth House, Mickey Mehaffey Children's Advocacy Program, sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Beaumont, a non-profit agency. The Program lessens the trauma experienced by physically and sexually abused children, by providing a child friendly environment for them to tell their stories to highly trained professionals. Children are referred by Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement for an interview. The interview is videotaped in order to reduce the number of times the children must repeat their stories. counseling is provided to help he children begin to heal. This year's benefit Pour Les Enfants will begin at 6:30 pm -10:00 pm, and is located at the Garth House - 1895 McFaddin, Beaumont, Texas. The Fund-raiser will feature hors d'oeuvres, a six course meal prepared by the Texas Chef's Association, wine and beer, music by Jimmy Simmons' Jazz Band, live and silent Charity Auctions by auctioneer, Johnny Dalby. This 10 day festival combines traditional and new events, officially kicking off with a lighted parade along Main Street, decked in thousands of twinkling light white lights, on Friday, Dec 3, starting at 6pm. The official city Christmas tree on Marktplatz is illuminated that evening, and the Christmas Tree Forest that is packed full of beautifully decorated trees opens for nightly viewing. A Christmas market, patterned after those in Germany, open weekends from Dec. 3-5 and Dec. 10-13, will be the perfect place to find that wonderful holiday gift.
